Last week, I told you about the Groundbreaking Election Day coverage we were planning for SayfieReview.com. Now that the dust has settled, I am happy to report that the coverage was an even greater success than we had originally anticipated. Our live Election Day video broadcasts from Florida precincts were viewed more than 43,500 times from viewers across the globe, surpassing any other Florida news organization.
Our live Election Day reports were featured on the BBC, Politico, Business Week, Wired Magazine, Tech President, the St. Petersburg Times, the Orlando Sentinel, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Lakeland Ledger and The Nieman Foundation at Harvard University.
As a publisher and editor, it was a fascinating experience to watch our coverage unfold. In the past, Election Day had always been a waiting game. Political operatives would sit around pacing the halls in their offices, checking the weather report every five minutes with no real information on what was going on at polling locations. With our reports, I believe we changed that, at least in Florida, forever. By carefully targeting precincts that represented specific voting demographics, we were able to report what voter turnout numbers were amongst samples of those critical voting blocks. For example, when our Correspondent reported from the campus of the University of Florida that voter turnout at 3:05 p.m. was already 75% we knew the race was over in Florida. Barack Obama had done the impossible - he had turned out young voters and we were the first in Florida to report it with hard numbers.
The response we received from our coverage was truly overwhelming. As with any bleeding-edge technology, there were certainly some kinks (Qik's servers shutting down completely mid-day due to server overload) but all in all, we believe the Sayfie Review readers benefited greatly and enjoyed our broadcast. We can't wait to tweak it and make it even better for next time.
